Description
Rosemary is native to the dry, rocky areas of the Mediterranean, especially along the coast. The genus name Rosmarinus derives from the Latin words ros and marinus which together translate to “dew of the sea.”
Rosemary is a member of the mint family and has been used since the time of the early Greeks and Romans, with the ancient Greeks religiously burning rosemary as an incense, giving rise to a flavoured smoke known to be profoundly cleansing.
In traditional medicine it was a popular aromatic constituent of tonics and liniments. Today its fragrant oil is an ingredient in numerous toiletry products and in vermouth.
As a woody evergreen, Rosemary has super-fragrant needle-like leaves, and white, purple, blue or pink flowers, depending on the variety.
Today, Rosemary is commonly used as a food seasoning and although most medical research is preliminary, studies note that Rosemary oil may assist wellbeing by improving mental focus and memory, relieving pain and inflammation, repelling certain insects and easing stress.
